The
doors to the Dana family’s beautiful home were thrown wide open for more
than 50 CGRS guests. The annual holiday potluck dinner consisted of many
different hot dishes, dips, and great desserts, this along with coffee and
soft drinks made for a great meal for everyone. Some guests I do believe had
seconds. You know who you were! Ha! |

| In this Issue | Richard Abler |
|
There are a couple of forms further back in this issue, one
for your annual dues (with the special price for gift memberships) and one
for the annual banquet.
It is important for CGRS planning purposes that you take care of these
housekeeping items as soon as you can. For the banquet, for example, several committees are hard at work - as we speak - to ensure a great evening for all. Committees are planning for raffle prizes, table decorations, physical setup of the banquet facility, the banquet buffet, and all the behind-the-scenes activities necessary to ensure that everyone has a good time. But as of now, the committee members don’t know how many of you to plan for. This year we’re privileged to have Paul Busse as our guest speaker. Paul is internationally known for his G-gauge railroad public displays. And again this year Jim Kimmel has built a one-of-a-kind structure that will go to a lucky raffle winner. There’ll be other great prizes as well. So please help us out. Send in your banquet reservations check this evening. If something comes up and you need to cancel, you’ll get your money back up to one week before the banquet. Make your checks for the banquet reservations and dues payable to "CGRS." Thanks in advance for your cooperation! |

| The Plant Manager | Barbara Abler |
| Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let
It Snow Some of you might say "Bah, humbug!" to the sentiments expressed in the title. But there are some real advantages for the garden in a deep snowfall. That thick, fluffy layer provides great insulation for all those tender plants in your garden and as long as it stays around you don’t have to worry about frost heave or mulching to prevent frost heave. Mother Nature has done that for you. In addition to the insulation, as the snow melts it provides for a nice, slow replenishment of the ground water supplies. That might not mean much to you now but it will if we have another dry summer. There is one tiny problem with this heavy snowfall. It weighs down the branches of all those cute little evergreens in the garden railroad. The weight can damage landscape plants, whether by malforming the branches or by breaking them. So, put on your boots and get your snow shovel and GENTLY shake the snow off the branches of the shrubs and small trees. Then, when you go back in the house, fix a nice hot toddy with a shot of brandy in it, settle in a comfy chair in front of the fire place, and go through all those seed catalogs and plant catalogs that are arriving now in the mail. And dream of all the great plants you will be putting out in the garden come spring. |
